History of Middleton Fair

DSC00163.JPGMiddleton Country Fair was held for 28 years at the Middleton Community Centre, McDowall St, Middleton, on the first Saturday in February each year, in the heart of “Scarecrow Country”.

The lovely little hamlet of Middleton is situated on the picturesque D’Entrecasteaux Channel being 45 minutes easy drive south from Hobart or 25 minutes north from Cygnet.

Smell the clean fresh country air of the Channel Country as you travel on the picturesque Channel Highway to Middleton and enjoy the breath taking water vista of the D’Entrecasteaux Channel and unique Bruny Island on your way. From Hobart drive 45mins, through Margate, Kettering, Woodbridge, Flowerpot to Middleton. You’ll see Scarecrows on fences, in paddocks and up trees. They are entries in the now famous annual Middleton Country Fair Scarecrow Competition.

The Middleton Country Fair was all about fun - rain or shine!  Around 2,000 people attend and one can see why it was a really enjoyable family day - over 70 stalls. Crafts, antiques and collectables, linen, books, native and exotic plants, fruit, vegetables, wine, cider and juices, preserves, sweets, photography and a whole array of homemade and artisan arts and crafts, tasty foods, plants, animal displays, trade displays, show ground amusement rides, pony rides, sheep shearing, bands, singers & performers, vintage cars, raffles, kids games and shows.

DSC00329.JPGThere was always ample food, ice creams and beverages available and a lucky gate prize awaiting some lucky visitor.

The Fair ran from 10am to 4pm. Entry was free for children and $5 for adults with a chance to win that lucky gate prize.

A free shuttle bus service was provided regularly to and from the parking area 2 kms from the venue.

The Fair was run by the South Channel Ratepayers and Residents Association Inc with funds raised used on local community projects. Many people attended to celebrate and support our local community at the same time!
